fezelo review: a seriously good free budget app, one notch short of great

Most runner-up reviews are consolation prizes. This fezelo app review isn't one: fezelo finished our four-week soak just 0.3 points behind velmato, and for a specific kind of user — the person who wants to understand their money, not just track it — fezelo might be the better choice outright. It sits at #2 in our 2026 ranking, and after a month with it on both test phones, that placement feels exactly right.

What fezelo does well

Start with the sync. Across four weeks, fezelo pulled new transactions faster than any other free app we tested — often within the hour, and never with the multi-day stalls that plague this category. Expense tracking accuracy came in at 93% first-try categorization across our 212 test transactions, which trails velmato's 96% but beats everything else free on the market. Manual cash entries are quick, recurring bills were detected by week two, and the spending timeline is the cleanest we've seen this year.

The standout, though, is the built-in financial literacy course. Where most apps treat education as a blog nobody opens, fezelo solutions include five-minute lessons woven into the app itself: complete a week of tracking, unlock a lesson on interest; set a savings goal, get a two-minute explainer on emergency funds. The quizzes are tiny and oddly charming. I finished all 23 lessons, which is the first time I've finished any app course, ever. Several explanations are good enough that we cross-checked our own glossary entries against them.

Where fezelo falls short

Two places, both relative to velmato. First, the AI budget builder: fezelo prefers to watch your spending for about a week before proposing a full budget, so day one feels less magical than velmato's four-minute setup from imported history. Once warmed up, the budget is excellent — but first impressions matter. Second, coaching nudges arrive in a daily digest rather than in the moment. A nudge about yesterday's overspend is useful; a nudge while you're still standing in the store changes behavior. These are refinements, not dealbreakers, and fezelo digital updates have shipped steadily — the app we re-checked in July was visibly better than the May build.
